On June 24, 2010, HopeSource staff members carpooled to Helen McCabe State Park, at the entrance to the Yakima Canyon, to help KEEN (Kittitas Environmental Education Network) water over 40 newly planted trees as well as check and fix browse barriers on the other 6500 trees that were planted last year. Many of the barriers had been pulled off by the wind and the visiting herd of cattle that grazed nearby. The staff was also greeted by a deer that bounded through the trees shortly after starting work and a large herd of cattle grazing on the property. Breaks included the ever desirable Addie Graaff cookies and lots of water as it was over 80 degrees and most of the work was in the sun.
The project sprouted from HopeSource's quarterly reading assignment: Our Day to End Poverty by Shannon Daley-Harris and Jeffrey Keenan. The book offers a cookbook style introduction to volunteering in the local and the global community. HopeSource staff decided together to tackle this service project as a way to give back to the local community that has given so much to them. They hope to continue this trend by weeding garden plots in downtown Ellensburg this July.
